Harsens Island. Formed by the dividing of the St. Clair River, the Middle Channel 
branching off to the west along the northern shore of the island, and the South Channel
forming the eastern and the southern shores.

  Standing silently alone and abandoned, this 1856 lighthouse remnant waits for death by
decay. Discontinued use in the 1920's, this, and the smaller lighthouse to the west, is all
that is left of the old ships navagational system coming from Detroit to the south channel of
the St. Clair River.

  This row of cottages are part of a community found on the extreme south-western tip
of the island, refered to as the 'old club'. These homes are built upon piles or round
wooden poles, supporting them above the waters surface.

  Another trip to Harsens Island didn't disappoint us any. I stopped to shoot this reflection 
of a bridge in the water at sunset.

  Summer On Harsens Island is like a fairy-tale land. The sunrises and the sunsets, seemingly 
so much different than at my house in Memphis, Michigan. Across the river from Harsens, the 
Algonac water tower can be seen.

  The waters are the hot spot for seasonal boating and fishing, around the famed St. Clair 
flats area. But the off season usually affords a totally different Island...one of ice- 
fishing and bone chilling living. The Island is accessable only by small boat or ferry 
service, which is sometimes cut off by major ice flow. Oftimes, the coast guard has to ply 
the waters to keep the ice moving to permit the ferry to operate. Not only is it beautiful 
in the summer, but if you brave the cold, what a winter wonderland!
