The winter of 2002/2003 was relativley mild for lower south-eastern Michigan.
We had our share of snow and cold, and the spring was warming up quite early-but then...
I remember having snow around my younger daughters 4th birthday. It was light, it didn't
stay. And I always use that for my rule of thumb:winter is not over until summer! This
year suprised everyone. I had been watching the lilac buds grow with great expectation.
Our first year in our new home, and I didn't know what color the lilacs would be. I love
the lilacs! Then the late april fools joke. There was so much ice on the trees and
powerlines, I don't remember seeing it this bad since about 1976. Not only was it a
catastrophy, but it was also awesome! What a winter wonderland. Tree limbs were snapping
and crashing to the ground. Traffic was all but halted. Power was out. But there is
where I come in.
My wife and I took a walk towards the evening of april 4th. It was cold and blowing,
but we still managed to hike about the town for a couple of hours. I shot a few rolls of
film, until we finally stopped in to a friends house for some anti-freeze (coffee!)
What a sight!
