Ever been sailing? Well, I have!
On September 6th, 2004, my son Bill and I were invited to take a ride on a 40' sail
boat. I'd never been sailing before, and this was a great oppertunity I didn't want
to miss.
We sailed out from the mouth of the Clinton River, out into Lake St. Clair, to
participate in a sailboat race. I had a hands-on, crash course in sailing that evening.
Totally awesome! I didn't take my camera. I was afraid of getting it wet, or dropping
it in the water. I didn't know if I would even have time to shoot!
We sailed again on September 13th, this time was a little easier, and I got some
photos!
Tall Ships are quite the sight. In July of 2001, The news of a parade of tall sailing
ships reached my ears. I waited for the day with high expectations. I have never seen any-
thing taller than the passing sailboats along the st. clair river. The day was hot and
hazy, but that wasn't going to stop me from getting a shot of this! I watched them live
on tv as they passed through the detroit river, heading upstream, destination:Algonac,
Michigan.
From the detroit river, they made their way north/northeastward toward the North channel
of the st. clair river. That brought them past lake st. clair and finally to Algonac.
What a sight! One by one they slowly made their way for port. They had lowered their
sails on the way up, and all that could be seen were the tall masts marching toward us.
As they neared, they passed by the docks, some heading north for Pt. Huron to dock, others
only waiting their turn to land.
Something that stays in your mind; the workmanship of these crafts, the miles of
rigging (which the sailers actually climbed!), and the ease in which the captains manuvered
their vessels.
I await their return...Meanwhile, I have these...
